Configuring IME to use pinyin (漢語拼音) for Simplified Chinese
1. Use control Panel to add East Asian Languages to Windows XP
1.1 Click on "Start" on the task bar to see a list of commands
 
 
1.2 Click on "Control Panel" and Control Panel appears
 
 
1.3 In the control Panel popup window, click on "Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options"
 
 
1.4 In the "Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options" window, click on "Regional and Language Options"
 
 
1.5 In the "Regional and Language Options" popup window, click on "Languages" tab
 
 
1.6 On this tab, check the "install files for East Asian language" box
 
 
1.7 A dialog box of "Install Supplemental Language Support" window pops up. Click on button "OK"
 
 
1.8 In the "Reginal and Language Options" window, click on button "Apply"
 
 
1.9 A popup window appears to remind the user to insert Windows XP CD
 
 
1.10 Insert the Windows XP CD. The progress of copying is being shown in "Regional and Language Options" dialog box
 
 
1.11 A dialog box appears asking the user to restart the computer. Click on "Yes" to reboot the system
 
 

2.

Configure Text services and input languages
2.1 After system restarted, repeat the steps 1.1 to 1.5 above to get to "Languages" tab of "Regional and Language Options"
2.2 click on button "Details"
 
 
2.3 In the "Text Services and Input Languages" window, click on button "Add"
 
 
2.4 In the "Add Input Language" window, select "Chinese (PRC)" in the upper box and
select "Chinese (Simplified) - Microsoft Pinyin IME 3.0" in the lower box
    
 
2.5 Click on "OK"
 
 
2.6 Note that "Chinese (PRC)" is added in Text Services and Input Languages window
 
 
2.7 Click on "Advanced" tab in Text Services and Input Language window
 
 
2.8 Check the box for "Extend support of advanced text services to all programs" and
uncheck the box for "Turn off advanced text services"
 
 
2.9 Click on button "Apply", a dialog box pops up asking the user to restart the computer
 
 
2.10 Click on "yes"
 
 
3. Specify Pinyin as the Input Method
3.1 After system restarted, repeat the steps 1.1 to 1.5 above to get to "Languages" tab of "Regional and Language Options"
3.2 click on button "Details"
 
 
3.3 In the "Text Services and Input Languages" window, highlight "Chinese (Simplified) - Microsoft Pinyin IME 3.0"
 
 
3.4 Click on button "Properties ..."
 
 
3.5 In the "Microsoft Pinyin IME Property" dialog box, check "Full pinyin" oval
 
 
3.6 Click on "OK" in the "Microsoft Pinyin IME Property" dialog box
 
 
3.7 Click on "OK" in the "Text Services and Input Language" dialog box
 
 
3.8 Click on "OK" in the "Regional and Language Options" window
 
 

4.

Use IME for character input
4.1 Start a WORD processor (e.g. Microsoft WORD or Notepad)
4.2 On the task bar, click on "EN"
 
 
4.3 On the popup, click on "Chinese (PRC)"
 
 
4.4 To enter "中国" in the text editor, key in letters "z h o n g" followed by digit "1" for the 1st tone
 
 
4.5 A character for "zhong1" is chosen for you
 
 
4.6 If this character is what you want, depress space bar to confirm it
If this character is not what you want, do the following:
4.6.1 depress right-arrow or left-arrow key to display the characters that are pronounced as "zhong1"
 
 
4.6.2 To choose, click on the character that you want or enter the digit displayed in front of the character
 
 
4.6.3 depress the space bar to confirm your choice
 
4.7 Use the same method to enter the character "guo2"
 
 
NOTES
5.1 Holding down <CTRL> key and depress space bar will toggle between EN and CH
Likewise, holding down <ALT> and depress <SHIFT> key can toggle between EN and CH also
 
5.2 To enter symbols (e.g. 标点符号)
5.2.1 Right Click the "CH" on the task bar
 
 
5.2.2 select "Restore the Language bar"
 
 
5.2.3 On the language bar, click on "Punctuation", now you're ready to depress symbol key on the keyboard
 
5.3 Use digit "5" for the light tone
